REVIEW FOR MASQUE THEATRE ‘A Handful of Friends’ by David Williamson Directed by Sue Bolton for Constantiaberg Theatre Players at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg Cast: Daniel Enticott; Jenny Brandt; Karen Van Schalkwyk; Brendon Stuart Spiro; Gizelle Willows Lighting Design: Gary Fargher Reviewed by Celia Musikanth Prolific Australian playwright David Williamson wrote this contemporary comedy/drama in 1976. His works generally focus on themes of loyalty, family and relationships. It was refreshing to attend a play with a 30 something cast of five. The set is split into three clear locations and is very well designed with good attention to detail. The lighting is effective and compliments the set very well. The theme (as stated in the Director’s note) is indeed universal and setting it in South Africa did not affect the underlying layers in the script in any way. Congratulations to Director Sue Bolton for taking the plunge with a thought provoking play about the thin line dividing truth, ambition and friendship. As far as the performances are concerned, each character has their own moment of “truth” as the play is well written with characters clearly defined and varied. The costumes (or “clothes” as referred to in the play) were totally in keeping with each character. Daniel Enticott convinced in his role of the History Professor with energy and conviction. Jenny Brandt as his wife was sincere to her character of a loving (to a point) and nervy wife. Gizelle Willows sparkled as the ambitious wife of the equally ambitious film writer Brendon Spiro (who had the right look for the part). Karen van Schalkwyk (sister of the Professor) has a secret which was the underlying reason for...........hmmm. Rather go and see this play for yourselves and put it all together! There are performances tonight (Thursday 26, Friday 27 at 8pm and Saturday 28 September at 2.30 and 6.30pm) Book through Masque Theatre Bookings on 021 788 1898 or email [email protected]
