REVIVE THE SUNNAH THIS RAMADAN – Part 4 Sunnah of entering and leaving the house 1. Remember Allah when entering your house: “When a man enters his house and mentions the Name of Allah while entering and while eating Shaytan says (to the other shayateen), ‘There is no abode for you and no food.” Muslim 2018. 2. Supplicate when entering: “O Allah, I ask You for the best of entering and the best of leaving. In the Name of Allah we enter, and in the Name of Allah we leave, and in our Lord, we place our trust… and then to greet its inhabitants (i.e. family). Abu Dawood 5096. By this, the person is consciously seeking to put his reliance on Allah when entering and leaving the house. This is also a means to create a permanent bond with Allah. 3. Use a siwak: When the Prophet (P) entered his home, he began by using a siwak. Muslim 253 4. Greet with salaam when entering the house. Abu Dawood (5096) narrated that Abu Maalik al-Ash’ari said: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihe wassallam said: “When a man enters his house, let him say, ‘Allaahumma inni as’aluka khayr al-mawlaj wa khayr al-makhraj. Bismillaah walajna wa Bismillaah kharajna wa ‘ala Allaahi rabbina tawakalna (O Allah, I ask You for the best entering and the best exiting. In the name of Allah we enter and in the name of Allah we leave, and in Allah our Lord we put our trust),’ then he should say salaam to his family.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 225. Al-Tirmidhi (2698) narrated that Anas ibn Maalik said: The Messenger of Allaah sallallahu alaihe wassallam said to me, “O my son, when you enter upon your family and say salaam, it will be a blessing for you and the members of your household." Classed as hasan by Al-Albaani in Takhreej al-Mishkaat (4652). 5. Say salam when entering the house where there is no one. Al-Bukhaari narrated in al-Adab al-Mufrad (1055) that Ibn ‘Umar (RA) said: “When you enter an uninhabited house, say “Al-salaamu ‘alayna wa ‘ala ‘ibaad-Illaah il-saaliheen (peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allaah).” 6. Leaving with the following supplication: “In the Name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might or power except with Allah.” It will then be said to the one who says this: “You have been sufficed and have been protected and Shaytaan has retreated.” Abu Dawood, 5095 and At-Tirmidhi 3426. Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) We enter and leave our houses many times during the day and nights; for prayer in the masjid, work, household duties etc. If we practice these sunan when we come and go, we will obtain for ourselves great benefit and reward. Some benefits of practicing these sunan are: • You will be sufficed in your important affairs, whether worldly or religious matters. • You will be protected from every evil and adversity, whether from Jinn or mankind. • You will receive guidance – Allah will guide you in all of your religious and worldly affairs. May Allah help us to practice and apply these sunan in our daily lives.
