REVelations in the Simple Things When women see something they like – they typically go all in. That’s why Pinterest should be considered a controlled substance and regulated by the federal government. I saw a hand knotted bath mat the first and last time I looked at Pinterest. I had to have it – and it was so easy to make. Famous last words. Things started off innocently -- I cut four bath towels into strips 4 inches long and about 1 inch wide. This accomplished my secondary goal of convincing my husband we needed new towels – there was no turning back now. I noticed a lot of lint – threads of terry were everywhere. I thought for sure it would stop after I started knotting things. WRONG. I put the strips in a bag and tied knots for about 2 hours the first night while I watched TV. The next night I tied knots for another 2 hours and noticed I was developing a little cough from the VOLUMES of lint all over the living room. After four hours, I had about four square inches of rug completed and a vacuum canister full of lint. Women go all in – whether it’s a relationship, volunteer work, devotion to our families or career, and our faith. There is no dipping your toe in – we are up to our necks or standing on the beach debating our next plunge. It’s one of our greatest strengths – and can also be a besetting sin. There’s a story of three women in Luke 8 who were all in when it came to the gospel. Their names are Mary, called Magdalene, Joanna and Susanna. There were many women who ministered along side of Jesus in addition to the 12 men we know more about. How did these three women stand out from the “many others” scripture mentions? Luke records that these women, “provided for Him (Jesus) and them (disciples) out of their property and personal belongings.” (Luke 8:3 AMP). These three women, and probably others unmentioned, didn’t just tip Jesus for good service for the miracles he was performing – they underwrote the gospel and funding the ministry. Women like this always caught Jesus’ attention – just like the widow with her mite in the temple. Jesus is moved when he sees women staking everything on God -- their effort and their personal earnings into kingdom. He knows a lot of things vie for our attention, good things –but when we chose eternal things – his heart smiles. This snapshot of scripture demonstrates that when women go all in – the kingdom of heaven is able to go all over. A lot like the lint from my ill-fated bath mat experiment. What does going all in look like? We share hope with our friends who are hurting, we take time to visit with a stranger in a check out line, we don’t give up on our children when they stray, we extend grace when we feel hurt. Whatever the season Jesus has called you to – or the field in which he has you planted– be all in. You won’t be disappointed. Now that’s what I call Revived, Encouraged, and Valued!
