RHU College of Engineering – Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering invites you to attend the thesis defense of Mr. Wissam Nawfal on Monday August 12, 2013 at 11 AM – Room D205. The thesis is entitled: “Selective Attention in a Crowded Environment.” Advisor: Dr. Nizar Al Awar Arbitration Committee: Dr. Rida Nuwayhid, Dr. Mohamad Diab, and Dr. Bassam Moslem Description: Biomedical and Biomechatronics engineering present the technological means for solving several pathological and physiological diseases and illnesses. The integration of engineering and biology led to a massive development in various medical fields. However, one of the physiological diseases is King Kopetzky syndrome problem. A person with King Kopetzky is characterized by his inability to listen to speech in a crowded area with background music or speech. A proposed preliminary solution for King Kopetzky is presented in this thesis based on three important parts: Blind Source Separation (BSS), Text independent speaker identification system, and a selectivity technique. The idea behind the proposed approach is to separate the signals for the patient and help him choose the target he wishes to hear.
