RICHARD III with Mark Rylance was fantastic and invigorating. The production is simple and elegant but also extremely theatrical. The language is spoken very naturally. Rylances portrait of Richard is of a sly, dissembling dark clown, determined to impose his brute will on everyone, but keeping an eye on how his act is going over at every moment. When near the end of the play, his mother enumerates his many flaws and crimes, he stamps around the stage, pained, angry and believing every word. He lets us see how his insecurities and guilt finally overwhelm him. His approach is broadly comic, but extremely detailed and psychologically acute without ever being Method-y. Its an extraordinary performance in a wonderful production. In the supporting cast, Samuel Barnett was excellent as Elizabeth Plantagenet. See it.
