RIGHT v LEFT Me and my colleague at work get on like a house on fire. Hes a good lad, works hard, stands up to the bosses and tells a good story. Only trouble is we cant talk politics. Not ever. He thinks Im a Communist who wants to take all his money, and I think hes a deluded right-wing twat. So we dont talk about it. Over the last year or two I have noticed something very profound. He spends his weekends having barbecues with his mates and his neighbours, barbecues at which it appears they all complain bitterly about the state of the nation, the spongers taking their money, immigrants and Labour; barbecues at which they all appear to universally declare their intention to vote UKIP because That Farage tells it like it is. Consequently he comes into work on a Monday thoroughly bloody miserable and bitter about everyone and everything. By contrast I spend my weekends with some amazingly energetic and dedicated people talking about music and politics and ways in which we could make the world a better place; I get to travel all over and meet people of all shapes and sizes, colours and creeds, who share the same sense of fairness, fraternity and fun. Consequently I start Monday slightly differently. Yes Im not overjoyed to be back at work, but I have a skip in my step looking forward to whatever adventures lie ahead, full of the knowledge that the majority of people I meet are brilliant and are fighting in whatever way they can to change things for the good. That to me is the difference between Right and Left. Time to pick a side.
