RIP Mickey Rooney. I shared my story about him on my Adam Bertocci page — in short, he was part of the project that I believed would take my career to some sort of next level. (As it turns out, that honor was saved for a Shakespearean mashup you all are presumably familiar with.) But, strangely, I have a Shakespearean story about him as well. I first read Shakespeare in eighth grade. We studied A Midsummer Nights Dream. As often happens when Shakespeare is taught in schools, there were occasional movie breaks. And so the very first time I saw Shakespeare performed, it was Act II, Scene 1 of the 1935 film… with Mickey Rooney as Puck. I dont claim theres any literal connection here. But Im glad I still remember the first time I saw the Bard. I havent seen that film in ages, but I still remember exactly how Rooney shouted out the girdle round the earth line.
