RIP to Robin Williams! Its such a loss to the world and especially to his family. A person dealing with severe depression and a co-morbid disorder such as substance abuse is always at an increased risk for suicide. There is help available and resources for those in need. The national suicide prevention life line is a great resource. The number is 1-800-273-8255. For family members or friends if you know someone who is severely depressed please dont take it lightly or say everything will be alright or just get over it! Please help them if they cry out to you! As a mental health professional I work with people everyday who are in the process of getting help after a suicide attempt. And their families never understand why they attempted. But a person who is depressed is living with impaired judgement and is not thinking about the consequences of their actions. It is very important to be educated about mental health because Depression or any other disorder knows no color or social class or gender!
