RISING AFL STAR AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP Regarded as one of the oldest sporting code in the country, AFL, better known as Australian Footy League is slowly picking up its status in the country. Youngsters as young as 11 years, are currently taking up the sport and many have had the opportunity to travel overseas. 19 year old Brendon Beno from Sialau District of Buka in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville started playing AFL in his childhood days and is currently one of the few AFL PNG’s scholarship players who has come through the AFL PNG’s Academy Program and is soon to join the Coolangatta FC in the Gold Coast. “Mi lukim olsem AFL igivim mi igivim mi chance long travel go lukim narapla kantri na mi hamamas long progress blong mi insait long displa game na mi lukluk long apim mak blong pilai blong mi wantaim displa opportunity (I saw that AFL gave me the chance to travel to overseas country and I’m happy with my progress in the game and to lift my standard of playing with this opportunity)”, says Beno. Young Beno currently stays at home and is enjoying his footy playing for the Koboni AFL Club in the Port Moresby AFL Esi Loan Premiership. And he was one of the best players for the club over the last two rounds of the competition playing as a Centre.
