GENDER: Men commit suicide more than 4 times as often as women but women are 4 times more likely to attempt suicide than men. 2). AGE: Suicide rates increase with age. Among men, suicides peak after age 45; among women, it peaks after age 55. The suicide rate, however, is rising most rapidly among young persons, particularly males 15 to 24 years of age , and the rate is still rising. 3). MARITAL STATUS: Single, never married persons register an overall rate nearly double that of married persons. 4). OCCUPATION: The higher a persons social status, the greater the risk of suicide. Among occupational rankings, professionals, particularly physicians, have traditionally been considered to be at greatest risk. Other high risk occupations include law enforcement, dentists, artists, mechanics, lawyers, and insurance agents. Suicide is higher among the unemployed than among employed persons. 5.) OTHERS: white race physical illness, mental illness, substance abuse, personality disorders, previous suicide behavior. By Dr Rakesh Mohanty ( RIMS, IMPHAL)
