“RIVERS YOUTH CONFERENCE; ROAD-MAP TO 2015 GENERAL ELECTIONS...” PREAMBLE Section 14 (2) (c) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended provides that “The participation of the people in their government shall be ensured in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution”.Also, the provision of subsection I, Article II of the African Youth Charter provides that, “Every young person shall have the right to participate in all spheres of society” safeguards the rights of young people in civic participation. INTRODUCTION The present democratic space, no doubt is assuming a very “interesting and engaging” phenomenon in our dear Rivers State. Of particular note is the alarming dimension at which residents and on-lookers view the politics of the place and the way young people (The Youths) are engaged in the process. It is proper the Rivers Youth chat a path towards an effective, positive and value-adding engagement in the democratic process, having 2015 General Elections in perspective. The Youth Alliance on Constitution Review & Electoral Reform (YACORE), is organizing a comprehensive three day sensitization and orientation conference for selected youth leaders from the 23 LGAs of Rivers State. This program, amongst other things, is intended to achieve the following: 1. Enlightenment of Rivers Youths on Effective Youth Engagement in Politics. 2. Deconstruction of the Youth Mentality from “Stereotypes” to “Agents of Political Development”. 3. Consolidate on the oneness of our vision as a people with common destiny and as ‘Leaders of tomorrow’. Selected Youth Development Experts and Leaders shall be serving as resource persons at the conference. Modalities for Invitations shall be relayed to appropriate LGA Youth Supervisors across Rivers State.
