ROBIN WILLIAMS RIP. Robin used to buy comic books from me in my comic book stores extending pre-dating his Mork & Mindy days especially my Haight Ashbury store dating to its opening in Nov 1976 after I went solo from my Comics & Comix Store #1 partners. As Robins fame grew he had to resort to disguises to come in to peruse the comics racks. Had many a fun conversation with the man on a host of subjects One memorable time in the late 80s Robin came in with a Groucho Marx disguise of plastic glasses and such on one can buy over the counter at many a tourist trap. He lasted about ten minutes before fans figured out who he was, began pestering him for autographs and such. He quickly placed his stack he had already picked out on the counter, said, Bob, be back later to get em, ran out the store to his car. Down Haight street used to be a place called The Other Cafe where he would some times schedule un-announced Improv appearances. My late friend Barry Bauman, an aspiring comedian himself, also an early force inside organized comics fandom of the 1960s, was plugged in to that joint, would find out, stop by, let me know, we would get in to a proper mood space, go on up, grab a table right up front the little stage with its mic, and enjoy Robin trying out new material never yet before seen. Damn, miss Barry still big time, now no more Robin Williams as well. We all have inner demons we battle. What I have not seen in the reports as of yet is he came in 3rd in the San Francisco Comedy club contest he entered the year before Mork. Never heard of #1 and #2 from that year again. A lot of fun memories reside inside this noggin of having comic book stores beginning in the early 70s, on thru the 80s in to the early 90s. Helping Robin Williams (and many others) find great comics reading material to enjoy was one of them. .
