ROCKETS AND SPARTANS DON’T LIKE EACH OTHER Whilst the People’s DJ was up North ‘doing work’, the Rockets had a game to win to confirm a double chance in finals and regain top position. The Rockets would also be without number 1 draft pick Jordan Canovan, with free agent Simon Grant playing after resolving the media beat-up that was Grant-Gate. A determined Rowville unit started strong going 5-0 in a hurry, before the Spartans clawed their way back in front, but they had no answer for Simon Grant despite the so-called defensive prowess of Ben Waterhouse, John White and Nick Melenhorst. Leading by six at the half, the Rockets were an inspired outfit with X-factor Josh West, who was accompanied by a lady-friend, lighting shit up splashing multiple deep three’s, finishing with 17 points for the game. The battle between Tom Melenhorst and Jarryd Moss was one for the ages, but despite Melenhorst only being kept to four points, his ability to find his teammates from the post and forcing defensive rotation was a key reason behind the victory. The Spartans made a late rush, but clutch free throws by Dale Crotty with 16 seconds left iced the game, giving the Rowville Rockets a 44-39 victory and top position on the Pro-Pac Section 8 Super League ladder. Despite West and Grant combining for 36, it was a team effort by the boys with the athleticism of Ben Borys being described by some as “exciting for the league”, while Matt Smyth returned from injury for the seventh time this season with GM Greg Cocks saying, “I was happy with Matt just to get through the game unscathed.” Dale Crotty brought league favourite Leigh Kitchin down a peg or two restricting him to a bagel, but the highlight of the game was the copious amounts of trash talk being spoken between the two teams that clearly do not like each other at all. John White was extremely disappointing for the Spartans, with too many shot attempts and his defensive efforts on the 18 year old West borderline non-existent.
