ROHAIL KHAN DIARIES – TRIBUTE TO BABA E URDU – DR. MOULVI ABDUL HAQ For the “first time in Saudi Arabia”, a grand event was organized in memory of Baba e Urdu Dr. Moulvi Abdul Haq (R.A) to commemorate his 140th Birthday (21st Nov 2012) and to propagate his works and message. Jeddah has rarely witnessed such “extra ordinary enthusiasm” and “exemplary love for Urdu”. Please refer to event’s video clip (25 seconds) at: youtu.be/0sUvzSrf0aI BABA E URDU – FATHER OF URDU • Dr. Moulvi Abdul Haq (16th Nov 1872 - 16th Aug 1961) was an acclaimed Urdu educator, writer, critic, linguist, lexicographer, editor, compiler, translator, etymologist, biographer and grammarian. • His entire life (90 years) was devoted to making Urdu the foremost language across sub-continent. He did not marry in order to serve Urdu. • He managed “Anjuman e Taraqqi e Urdu” consistently for 50 years both Pre-partition India and Pakistan. • Having realized the demise of Persian language, Moulvi Abdul Haq made it his life-time mission to place Urdu language head-to-head with English and Arabic. • Baba-e-Urdu was the moving spirit behind the establishment of Osmania University Hyderabad, Deccan, where all subjects were taught in Urdu. World’s largest “Urdu Translation Center” was established whereby rare Urdu books and Deccani manuscripts were translated and published in Urdu. • He was creator of the world’s largest Urdu-English Dictionary (1930) . • After Osmania University, he was instrumental in setting-up the world’s first Islamia College for Women, Lahore (1939) and Pakistan’s first Urdu College in Karachi (1949) later converted to a multi-faculty, multi-site Federal Urdu University. • His devotion to Urdu was par excellence. At the time of migration to Pakistan (Nov 1947), he personally hand-carried 15,000 rare Urdu books from Dehli to Karachi. • Moulvi Abdul Haq was a die-hard proponent to make Urdu the National language of Pakistan. • He initiated (in 1959) the grand project of compiling 22 volume Modern Urdu Dictionary on the lines of Oxford Dictionary. This tedious project was completed three years ago under the Urdu Dictionary Board, Pakistan. • Baba e Urdu authored more than 20 books on pioneering areas such as: biography, criticism, lexicography, translation, etymology, grammar, linguistic comparisons. • His creations are valuable reference material that could be utilised for research on Urdu language and literature.
