ROLE OF INTERFAITH DIALOGUE IN MAINTAINING PEACE AND HARMONY IN MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY: The term “Interfaith Dialogue” refers to cooperative, constructive and positive interaction between people of different faiths, religious sects and humanist beliefs at both the individual and institutional levels. It often involves promoting the sense of understanding between different religions to increase acceptance of others, rather than to fuse new beliefs. Interfaith dialogue is a meeting of intellectuals of different faiths in a formal sitting to discuss religious opinions and practices they have in common, usually with the intention to reach on the agreed upon point and expanding their common ground to create peace and harmony in a multicultural society. It can be a series of discussions amongst followers of different religions as well as sects. Interfaith dialogue can best be described as public forum which includes and respects the people with different opinions. Peoples of different backgrounds, from around the world, can no longer thoroughly avoid each other in the age of globalism without working to generate understanding among themselves, and it can only be achieved by engaging and interacting with dissimilar members of various religious groups. The world consists of the communities built on a shared set of values that are the foundations of a strong society; hence, interfaith dialogue is the only way forward to bring peace and harmony among them. In these present times, co-operation between Faith groups is crucial. The number of people who have Faith is growing; therefore the responsibility multiplies for those who are tasked with the responsibility to unite the people on common interest. The word Faith reflects the broader struggle within society. This is a struggle between the open-minded and the narrow-minded. In an era of globalisation society is becoming more diverse and the “Interfaith” is creating a more global sense of community, the existence of such respect and mutual understanding becomes essential and that can only be received through Dialogue. The above mentioned points highlight the importance of creating a common platform for interfaith understanding and creating mutual respect in multicultural society.
