ROME SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’S YOUNG ARTIST’S COMPETITION 2015 FIFTH ANNUAL INSTRUMENTAL AND ARIA COMPETITION TWO DIVISIONS: HIGH SCHOOL (9TH thru 12TH grade) AND COLLEGIATE (undergraduate) Open to students of strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano or voice, including Floyd County, Polk County, Chattooga County, Cherokee County, Gordon County and Bartow County students. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: All entrants must be a resident or attend school in one of the listed counties above. All entrants must be in good standing with their institution’s programs; actively enrolled and participating in ensembles or given a waiver by the appropriate authority (such as principal, ensemble director or program director). All entrants must be in ongoing lessons with a private teacher or professor. All entrants must provide their own accompanist and cover any associated fees and costs. Instrumental entries will consist of one movement from a standard concerto. Other possibilities may include one movement ‘concertino’ type works with orchestra in the 8-12 minute range. Aria entries will consist of an aria from a standard opera or oratorio for which the orchestra materials are readily available either by reasonable purchase or rental. Repertoire must be approved by the Music Director & Conductor of the Rome Symphony Orchestra. This is to ensure availability of the music, particularly in cases where the score and parts might be subject to rental availability. The competition will take place on Sunday afternoon, February 22, 2015, at Brookes Chapel, Shorter University, Rome, GA. The competition will be judged by Dr. Richard Prior, RSO Music Director and Conductor; and professional musicians who are not affiliated in any way with any entrant. One winner will be selected from each category and division and invited to perform on the Rome Symphony’s April 25, 2015 concert at Rome City Auditorium. Winners receive an honorarium. Applicants must submit a completed entry form and a $35 non-refundable application fee and a signed permission statement (parent and/or teacher).
