ROSES ON THE ARBOR - c March 9, 2001 (Written for my mother upon her death and read at her funeral.) I look upon the arbor in spring, anchored deep in fertile ground, Its long spans arching firmly upward and Along their guiding lengths, the buds of three roses. I look upon the arbor in summer, standing firm in warm sunlight, Its long spans arching ever upward and Along their guiding lengths, three roses bloom. I look upon the arbor in autumn, weathered now in cold sunlight, Its spans now bending as though to follow the arc of the setting sun. Within its spreading shadows, three roses have become a bouquet. I look upon the arbor in winter, its form now dim in fading twilight, The stems of three roses remain, nestled close, Within their shadows, the promise of spring. - John Russell
