RUPP AND FLANAGAN WIN US 10K, by Alfons Juck, EME News DES MOINES (USA, Jun 20): Olympic silver medalist Galen Rupp won his fifth national 10 000 m crown in a row in heat and humid weather, biding his time until fewer than 800 meters remained to strike and securing a birth on the IAAF World Championships starting line in 28:47.32. The 27-year-old athlete led Oregon Project teammate Dathan Ritzenhein and Jerry Schumacher-coached Chris Derrick across the line in under 29:00 minutes (28:49.66 and 28:52.25). Fourth Ben True 29:07.26. After a quick opening lap of 72 seconds, Shalane Flanagan was never seriously challenged winning her third USA 10 000 m title by 34 seconds in 31:43.20. For Flanagan, 31, an Olympic bronze medalist, it was her 15th overall national title. Second Jordan Hasay 32:17.34 and third Tara Erdmann 32:24.16. Neither of this two is assured that they will run in Moscow because they have yet to earn either the IAAF „A“ or „B“ (32:05.00) standard for the event. Under USA Track & Field rules, they have until July 20, to improve their times, something both the athletes and their coach said they would do in a special mixed-gender race to be held in Oregon, probably in Portland, in the coming weeks. Should both women get only the „B“ standard, fourth place Amy Hastings (32:31.28) would make the team with the highest placing „B“ athlete because Hastings already has the „A“ standard from last summer‘s Olympic Games. Should neither women get the „A“ or the „B,“ Flanagan, Hastings and fifth place Kara Goucher (32:59.23) would make the team because she has the „B“ standard already (she ran 31:46.64 at Stanford University last April). From RRW. In other two technical finals of the first senior day Andrea Geubelle won the triple 14.03 (+3.4, 13.72 +1.9) ahead of Toni Smith 13.93w and Amanda Smock 13.77w. No one from them has the B World standard of 14.20. In men triple Omar Craddock 17.15 +2.2, 16.59 +1.8) beat olympic medalist Will Claye 17.04w and Ryan Grinnell 17.02w. Christian Taylor has the wild card and Craddock and Claye have so far B standard. Brittany Borman won the javelin with 60.91 with Arvana Ince second 56.66 and Kara Patterson third 55.88. Only Borman has the B standard.
