RV Trip Day 10 Wake up in a.m. to the sound of mortar and machine - TopicsExpress

RV Trip Day 10 Wake up in a.m. to the sound of mortar and machine gun fire along with Osprey (choppers) flying overhead. I dont know why, but there was something calming and reassuring about that; how that can be when on a battlefield it would be sounds you would not want to hear, I don’t know! We are no more than a few miles from Camp Geiger in New River which is the air base and hence frequent flyovers, makes for fascinating watching! The homecoming was less than spectacular, CLB (combat logistics battalion) came off the ships in small groups over several days so there werent fly overs, speeches or large groups but DARN, it was nice to see my boy get off the bus. He looked good and had the swagger of one tough and ornery Marine (he always has been a little ornery). Next thing I know, I have 10-12 Marines (they keep piling in so I lost count) in the RV along with my mom and the 2 dogs. Yes, we are breaking the law as the max capacity is 7. The guys are blowing off steam and had already been drinking so they were crude and socially unacceptable but......well; they were just blowing off steam. My mom, she wasnt so happy and told me I was just as crazy as them for carting them all to BWs (Buffalo Wild Wings). We made it safe and the guys chilled a bit while continuing to drink and eat wings. The more they drank the calmer they all seemed to get!!!!!! On the return trip I lost a few of the guys but figured they were perfectly capable of making their way back to base, one way or another. It was now late and the trek to the RV park seemed daunting (sleep deprivation had set in) so I parked on base. I must admit, I was a little uneasy as I didnt want a knock on the door in the middle of the night but the guys assured me all would be good and they would talk to the Duty if there was a problem.....there wasnt any! One thing I have noticed time and time again over the past four years is when in civilian clothes Marines (maybe not all but most) are a bunch of young knuckleheads, but when the uniform goes on the posture and demeanor changes and although still crude they become socially acceptable and professional! It’s an interesting transformation to see!!!!!
