RV fun facts taken from RV at Clems yet? How much do you know about RVing? How much do you know about the RV world? I came across some fun facts that I thought I would share with you guys. I though I knew a fair amount but even I learned a few things on this one. 1.) The term RV wasn’t coined until the 1960s. Until then, all units were either campers or travel trailers. 2.) Richard Klinger, founder of Wakarusa’s Holiday Rambler (now a division of Monaco Coach Corporation) started building trailer parts in a chicken coop and assembling the trailers outdoors in the 1950s. Always an industry pioneer, Holiday Rambler originated the 48-inch-wide dinette/bed concept. 3.) Brothers Tom, Keith and Claude Corson chose the name Coachmen for their company (originally called Coach Company) after Tom spotted a motel called Coachman along the Ohio Turnpike. The brothers settled on Coachmen Industries, Inc., as the name for their Middlebury company because it implied more than one person, and they reasoned many people would be needed to make their company a success. 4.) Founded by Lloyd Jay Bontrager in 1968, Jayco of Middlebury always has been family owned. Today, the company is the nation’s largest privately owned manufacturer of RVs. 5.) As early as 1920, RVers often camped in simple wooden house structures built in their backyard and added to a model T chassis to recreate their home environment on the road. 6.) RV camping clubs date back to the Tin Can Tourists of the 1920s and 1930s. Tin Can Tourists were RVers who brave the dust and mud to drive their tin Lizzies across the U.S. before transcontinental roads were paved, camping by the side of the road, heating tin cans of food on a gasoline stove and bathing in cold water. 7.) After World War II, the RV industry flourished as Americans answered the call of the open road. 8.) Some of the newest luxury RV’s are actually buses with turbo diesel engines, with expandos that rival luxury apartments. 9.) Many of today’s RV manufacturers got their start in the 1950s and 1960s. 10.) Early travel trailers ended up as permanent housing for families during the Great Depression.
