Raahgiri Liberating Self Transcending all age and gender related barriers, Raahgiri Day has become a weekly ritual for the fitness freaked Delhiites. Raahgiri Day, a perfect rendezvous between strangers where all meet on a common platform shedding all inhibitions, overcoming all barriers, working together towards the pedestrianization of Connaught Place. New Delhi: the largest city to join the Raahgiri Day movement & the fourth city in India to host weekly Raahgiri Days. Raahgiri Day made its Delhi debut at Connaught Place’s inner circle on the 13th July 2014 and the Delhiites from all corners of the city started arriving at the event location as early as 6 am. The capital city of India now hosts car-free Sundays each week. Starting with about 5,000 people on the first Raahgiri Day, within three weeks, the number doubled and is estimated to have turned to be more than 10,000 people. Initiated in the inner circle roads of CP, spreading across to the middle ring and also touching upon the outer ring, Raahgiri is expected to expand much further, helping reclaim the streets for people. New Delhi Police, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), EMBARQ India and the Times of India have extended unconditional support to this venture. Besides Navi Mumbai and Ludhiana, Bhopal has also started replicating Raahgiri Day; and many other cities in India project the intention to follow. The term Raahgiri, with its mystic appeal, owes its origin to the Hindi word– Raahagir, meaning Traveller. It connotes the idea of a journey – be it on our streets or of our lives. This venture pushes us to take charge of our own journey. Raahgiri Day was selected as one of six most innovative solutions in addressing road safety. It was also chosen as the 24 most innovative ideas from urban India. By promoting Public Transport as the chosen mode of transportation in future, Raahgiri is undertaking a great service to mankind. In a global webinar led by an American Research Firm named Low Emissions Development Strategy Global Partnership, Raahgiri was presented as one of the two global achievements in the field of sustainable transport.
