Rabies in Pell City...so whats the big deal? Maybe this will help you understand that animals that have rabies dont always act like Old Yeller. This is the rabid raccoon found just before Christmas in the Mill Village area on the street behind our Senior Center. Looks a little wobbly but pretty healthy otherwise, right? Rabid animals have been found in Pell City since Fall 2014 near the Civic Center; across the water from the boat launch at Lakeside Park; on 18th Ave near 231S; near Pell City Animal Hospital; in Pine Harbor, (attacked a dog); at the mini lots in Skyline subdivision; along the edge of the water in the area behind the ASPCI animal shelter; in the area of Stemley Bridge Road near the bridge to Talladega (attacked a dog); and two in our neighboring town of Riverside. The best way to keep people protected from rabid animals is to vaccinate our pets with the rabies vaccine, which can only be done by a licensed veterinarian. Our pets are the ones more likely to come in contact with a rabid animal. All dogs, cats and ferrets must be vaccinated for rabies once they become 3 months of age and kept current thereafter. Are YOUR pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations?
