Race is a very sensitive subject in America, but the mainstream media have pushed it to the forefront with the Trayvon Martin shooting. This provides people with an opportunity to have the “honest conversation” about race that the country needs to have. Like President Obama said two days ago during his unscheduled remarks on the tragic Trayvon Martin case: “African-American young men are disproportionately involved in the criminal justice system, that they’re disproportionately both victims and perpetrators of violence. It’s not to make excuses for that fact. Although, black folks do interpret the reasons for that in a historical context. They understand that, some of the violence that takes place in poor black neighborhoods around the country is born out of a very violent past in this country. And that the poverty and dysfunction that we see in those communities can be traced to a very difficult history.” The president summed up the big picture on violence in the black community fairly accurately with his remarks. But there are two things that must be pointed out: gun control in urban areas has failed to bring down violence in the black community (there is a very surprising related statistic in the slideshow) and the social-economic factors that may contribute to violence have worsened for blacks since the 1960s, and particularly, under the nation’s first black president. It is important to be sympathetic towards others regardless of race and non-judgmental of other Americans based on their skin color alone. But when policies
