Race started. There was heavy downpour in Batac and that was when I felt the first signs of blisters forming. Runners can attest to the fact that you may have the best and latest pair of running shoes with the best cushioning technology and so on, (and you may have generously applied lubricant on your feet, but how unfortunate that I was born ‘pasmado’ and the relentless rain got me all drenched), but that does not guarantee blister-free feet. The pain was all that occupied my mind. I went on with the race, nevertheless. The route from Laoag to Sinait was a challenging course. And when back-up finally arrived when I reached Ilocos Sur, I was elated to see my family in the van. But nothing made me happier than hearing the voice of my Alistaire every 3 hours or so, cheering me on and sharing with me the good news that she just finished her goldrush24k run. I was exhausted but they kept me motivated to the finish line. There is no easy way out of our choices. Sometimes you stick to it even when you want to give up, because you know that on the other side is validation of (not really your ability) but your potential – that you can better your best and discover, along the way, that there are still people supporting you and giving you unconditional love. The vibe hasn’t left me and I believe that the joy and the humility it has brought me have stuck and will linger even after my blisters have healed and when my sun-burnt skin has become even again. And I will forever praise the Lord for how strong He has created the human body, the beauty of sacrifice and the gift of family and friends.
