Rachel Update: Rachel was officially discharged from the hospital this afternoon! It has been incredible to observe her progress first hand: making through an 11.5 high-risk surgery on 11/17 and being intubated through 11/18, to resting at home just a week later. Rachel handles suffering with more grace than anyone I have ever met; it was humbling and a privilege to witness her fight her way back home. The remaining Mycobacterium Kansasii infection is the biggest risk moving forward. When first diagnosed back in June, they put her on a two-year antibiotic plan to combat the infection, so this is something she will continue to battle for awhile. Further, she needs to continue to heal from the trauma of the surgery: the removal of the right lung; various incisions from three catheters going in and out of her chest; the damaged pericardium sac which was repaired with cow intestines; and the rib cage area which was repaired with titanium wiring and a stainless steel plate. We are grateful for an excellent and caring staff of doctors, nurses, and others at Mercy. Their creativity and care for Rachels case have provided us opportunities and solutions that might not have otherwise been possible. Thank you for the thousands of thoughts, prayers, and kind gestures of support. It means the world to us.
