Racing picks for Santa Anita 092813 Saturday by hsw If Belmont Park is a difficult chair to sit upon then Santa Anita and west coast racing in general is a coil addled with a vitriol worthy of Dr. Doom’s palette- after spending over 40 years trying to figure some things about West Coast form I’ve learned essentially nil- nevertheless every so often I assume by sheer perseverance I hit a lucky streak and that spur me on to once again take a dip in the red and so its gone for many decades- vet with 5 G1 races on the menu a racing fan would committing a grave sin not offering his or her opines upon the matters soon to be settled so then lets have a gander at the program for Saturday 092813 at Santa Anita- Race 1-9 > cal bred cal sired whatever there is no form for Cal-breds as far as I can tell- fillies and I’ll go on the outside (a bad place most times with an El Corredor lass- Another Victoria 5/1 ML and Bejarano R. is the capable rider- Race 2-5 > there is a great difference between “handicapping” a race and selecting a horse you happen to like based on form of pedigree or coloration of coat etc. any number of a million tings- handicapping is a very special skill in which the handicapper discards the useless and somehow manages to find the contenders and then by “scientific” methodology unwinds the winner from the knot of the future- this race is a sprint- anyhow 9 times out of 10 when I have to look at a horses pedigree to decide that particular horse will lose- maybe Run Hide will be an exception to that rule- he should be fast judging by hi broodmare sire array- Race 3-3 > no shortage of well bred maidens herein they want to get 1 mile on the turf which most of these blue noses can get only by hopping a trolley so I’ll go with the colt dropping from a 100K stakes affair Yes Yes Yes- whose 4th dam was good enough to win the Black-Eyed Susan’s which I figure is a dirt race- worth a wager I suppose- Race 4-1 > I can’t go beyond long shot Candy Shoes- whose debut a Del Mar if not earth shaking was fair for the 1st run- maybe he’ll improve - big heart fans might be glad to hear he traces back to a daughter of Darby hero Mahmoud- 5- 1 > G1 tyro fillies- Fascinating went down to defeat in a G1 recently taking my loot to the bottom of Lake Isabella- I see redemption in the cards- but there is mucho speed in this heat so Fascinating better be- 6- 4> G1 fillies and mares going the US classic distance of 10 furlongs- I’ve been playing My Gi Gi for quite a spell so I’ll stick with her in a very tough proposition- La Troienne’s son Bimelech sired her 4th dam nut overall the papers seem weak- there is a Galileo mare from a very blue branch of the 1-w family- so exactor hunters may zero on that pair- very tough race- 7-2 > this G1 I assume is also a prep for the upcoming Breeders Cup fiesta - and tyro colts seeking to advance will line up - there is only one unbeaten in these ranks and that is Schoolofhardrocks- and he represents a very fine line of 9-f broodmares and their allies- (Blushing Groom & Northern Dancer & Mr. Prospector etc.) 8-13 > time to break out the big guns I’ll take Hero’s Marine a easy 100/1 shot running for Cho Myung K - she raced last at Fairplex and the jump here is higher than the cow over the moon- - and I’m counting on the Man O War/Mahmoud stack to bring her home in front!! 9-2 > The Zenyatta Stakes at G1 level gets a run - might as keep dreaming I’ll peg 30/1 ML Via Villaggio to upset - Royal Charger sired the 6th dam - perhaps a flimsy web to hold a tank but she is a Bernardini filly and he is one erratic sire- call a Brinks truck if the aforementioned double of 13 & 2 come in - like $5,000 for $2!! 10-7 > I am sentimental - ( getting weepy watching movies etc.) so Paynter who gallantly has cheated the reaper gets to cavort on this terrific program- hope he wins - after all the stakes is named for his sire! He’s a fine horse who just missed in the Belmont Stakes to all out Union Rags- 11-8 > a stakes for turf 3yo fillies going on the SA downhill etc. why not play handsome Gary Stevens- after all War Front is on of the best studs operating in the known galaxy- the 3rd dam was west coast star Past Forgetting so maybe something has rubbed off- Best of luck with your picks: Hs watnik @2013
