Racing selections 062013 Thursday The transition from the “classic” season to the summer season has begun in earnest, and looking high and low, I’d say the best horse training now on planet earth must be gelded Wise Dan- this must be swell for his sire, unlikely Wiseman’s Ferry, but the ancient adage “a good horse can come from anywhere!” holds its ground thru the passages of clouds and moons- And it must seem to some fans that there is a paucity of stars to entertain us as the humidity and temperatures rise- of course if great Frankel, the horse, were to have done his racing here in the states, babies would have been named after him, public schools would also be christened “Frankel Elementary #182” in some swarming metropolis- I’d be sneaking a “Frankel Candy Bar” -perhaps in Kentucky, a bourbon would be crated bearing his name and likeness- for no matter how savvy the Brits may be, it took the Beatles coming to America to create the “Beatlemania” of many of our younger days- if Frankel, turns out to be a good stallion, the chances of the Sadler’s Wells division of Northern Dancer’s male line will be supreme in the world within the next decade seem certain if it is not there at the moment- It seems breeders in America were rather slow to get on the Sadler’s Wells bandwagon and standing on my head I can’t recollect any of the great sires youngsters coming this direction across the pond from the early crops of that terrific son of Northern Dancer- maybe Barathea, came across early but he did not last long, indeed if he ever stood here- but El Prado, gave plenty of testimony and his slow to develop youngsters often blew up the tote when they finally put the race game together- but perhaps the real big story of 2013 will be a resurgence in the yearling marketplace- a tent into which much of the blood in the blood-horse courses- young sires and young dams- stakes winners mated to champions- champions to champions- can we expect a return to the glory days of The Green Monkey?! War Front, as a sire won a couple of races opening day at Royal Ascot -the n and it is interesting that during his racing days War Front, was for all intents and purposes a quality sprinter- and now he has sired Lines of Battle, the Dubai Derby winner and Declaration of War, who won the Queen Anne, in fine fashion- one of War Front’s popular sons was The Factor, who enriched recovering B. Baffert and his other principles with dash and class- but beyond 9 furlongs the War Front progeny might be wary of jumping across that Siegfried Line- but let the races spin that line out- War Front, is a son of ultra fast and ultra brittle Danzig- who was trained by Woody Stephens, and when the late great trainer looked at his stop watch when Danzig was young and uninjured, his hat flew off his hat and wound up in Jamaica Bay!! Danzig, raced a few times much to the loss of US racing which sure could have used a fighting fast horse like the somewhat diminutive son of Northern Dancer was- War Front, was bred by Joseph Allen, who also seems to have a “piece” Declaration of War, the Queen Anne hero- and he was bred boldly, War Front, with Northern Dancer ingrained at 2x5 in his papers- also in the mix is 3 legged Fighting Fox, the fine brother of Gallant Fox- little Hyperion, is engaged 5x5 in War Front’s pedigree panorama- Dr. Fager and Princequillo as well as potent Matchem represenative In Reality, also are significant mileposts along the path of War Front’s ancestral history- and mighty Mahmoud, is crossed with Forli, a 5x3 juxtaposition which is pleasing to this pedigree reader- The figures for War Front are dosage >6-13-22-3-0 certainly a significant population of chef de race points- his DI: 2.14 is better than speedsters usually possess but that is insignificant I suppose- his old GSV: 78.44 IS!! a powerful numeric- Mr. Allen, has been racing in NYRA environments since I was a puppy- at least his name sounds as familiar as if he has- it is a rare distinction to possess a champion stallion- they do not come to the farm with any regularity, in my era leading sires have been such as TV Lark and Tiznow and What A Pleasure and Exclusive Native and Storm Cat etc. here in the US- Nodouble, might have led the list, perhaps the last Hyperion line sire who will achieve that feat in the modern US- War Front himself won the G2 AG Vanderbilt stakes and finished placed in a couple of G1 sprints- His female family traces back to a daughter of exceptional Eight Thirty, easily one of the greatest stallions in US breeding history- his influence on the female side of the breeding equation is profound- daughter Sunny Vale, being the 6th dam of War Front- and if I’m not mistaken the family goes back to Artless, a daughter of Hamburg, she was a sister (?) to excellent filly champion Artful, the only horse to ever finish ahead of Sysonby, the latter a early 20th century equine deity- further back in the story we find Mary Clark, a daughter of Kentucky’s greatest son Lexington- that great chestnut son of Boston, led the US sire list 14 consecutive years!! Artful, a champion in the US- was every inch the picture of the modern racing equine and her pedigree should br required study in any University of bloodlines- the family further has roots back to the Cub mare of 1762- this family is designated 4-R & perhaps its greatest champion was prodigious Zenyatta!!
