Racing selections 063013 Sunday It is has been said that a thoroughbred champion doesn’t need to carry his “track” nor “special conditions” around with it- nor does he (she) carry excuses like losing lotto tickets under his saddlebags- no matter what comes before the “champion” he remains unfazed, ready to delve maximum effort and drive for victory come hell or high water- which is what streaking Wise Dan accomplished at Pacific Rainforest on the Ohio River soggy Churchill Downs - for Wise Dan in the Firecracker G2 delivered the mail in high style running his current win streak to seven straight including a heart stopping victory over enigmatic Animal Kingdom in 2012’s signature BC Turf Mile- sporting the unlikely pedigree of Wiseman’s Ferry x Lisa Danielle x Wolf Power(SAF) - Wise Dan is the reigning Horse of the Year here in America and he’s working well to become reigning gelding of the world- a robust 6yo he is a Kentucky born homebred and owned by Mr. Fink- In the Firecracker Mile run over a swamp Wise Dan bested Lea, who was out of a Galileo damsel, Greenery- this to my mind holds a key to just how good Wise Dan has become- since Galileo, was more of less responsible for 75% of the Irish Derby field -which was won in style by his grandson Trading Leather- anyway, a refresher course concerning Wise Dan’s pedigree seems to be necessary for me and perhaps the gentle reader may profit from another look at his paperwork- Most pertinent to me is the fact that the grandam of Wise Dan was sired by mightiest of all modern equines Secretariat- in the Bicentennial year Secretariat was sent atop a daughter of highest class Lyphard, a dark brown French lass Laquiola, bred and owned by the Wertheimer clan - Askmysecretary, was the result of that breeding and she was unraced- in 1993 (?) she was bred to South African star Wolf Power, the begotten being Wise Dan’s noble dam- on the sire side of the equation Wiseman’s Ferry, was a distinguished racehorse winning several middle rung derbies- Mr. Fink may have been thinking that by breeding this to that he’d double up Secretariat, in the projected pedigree of what was to become Wise Dan- and we find Secretariat at 5x3 in the pedigree of the champion- but what may be more important is that 2 South African giants- Hawaii, a classic sire and Wolf Power, a neglected sire are positioned at 4x2 in the pedigree of relentless Wise Dan, who is well on his way to joining John Henry & Forego among the premier geldings in the post-Kelso age- The tail female for Wise Dan is tip top of the line 5-h making him a “Carpet Slipper” - pedigree mavens know this troop well as it is the household from where Sadler’s Wells was issued and he is sire to tremendous Galileo- this season sire of both the Irish Derby 2nd and the English Derby winner plus many others of the highest caliber including undisputed world champion Frankel, the horse- (it should be clarified that Sadler’s Wells stems from the line developed from Carpet Slippers half sister Dalmary) all this goodness and class may be laid at the door of Simon Shoes, the daughter of Simon Square (circa 1914) Simon Shoes indeed was a half sister to virile Charles O’Malley- It is the caprice of nature that Wiseman’s Ferry a lug of a chestnut should somehow ignite the Carpet Slippers entourage of matrons and kindle the fire breathing Wise Dan- this is not to say that the strand leading to Wise Dan was barren and thirsting- nope- such dynamics as Lalika & Roi Lear were conspicuous long before Wise Dan, topped all and now seems poised to accelerate where few steeds have gone before- critics may be dismissive that he prefers less mileage than Gallant Fox or Kelso or John Henry and Forego for that matter- but his scenario has yet to play out, at the moment his connections would like to program him at a mile or so- Wise Dan has a successful gelded half brother Successful Dan! winner of 800K his dam has dropped a number of other foals good enough to bank 100K plus!! And this achievement marks one of Secretariat’s high points as a broodmare sire- but despite the good news emanating from Wise Dan -2013 marks yet another year where Secretariat has failed to show up along any classic winners broodmare sire array (I’d double check that statement before betting on it) whatever Secretariat’s situation is concerning the “classics” his presence in Wise Dan, can be ascertained in the handsome chestnut colors and in the regal baring of the 2012 HOY- anyway, the family “5” dates back in the sagas to 1700 & The Massey Mare- being the appellation of the well spring of Wise Dan, whose dosage will leave no one sighing >1-3-4-2-0 with a DI: 1.50 and a old GSV mark of 56.42 - where Wise Dan, performs next is the best thing at the moment to look forward to on the calendar and it is with great zeal I stand up and applaud Wise Dan’s connections for racing him in the most inhospitable climate and I’m sure the folks over at Churchill Downs feel the same way- Wiseman’s Ferry, last I looked was a New York stallion and favors his sire Hennessey, a bit in appearance- he is a La Troienne 1-x stallion as his 4th dam was a half-sister to Buckpasser!!
