Radyo Pilipinas News Bits... An OWWA scholar recipient is this year’s lone Filipino scholar admitted to the West Point Academy of the United States of America. Don Stanley C. Dalisay, a recipient of the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP), hails from Batangas. He belonged to Batch 4 of the OWWA EDSP scholars for school year 2007-2011. He took up Bachelor of Science major in Public Health at the University of the Philippines. After graduation, he took and passed the 2011 Board Examinations for Medical Technologists. His OFW father is a seafarer. As school valedictorian during his high school days at the University of Batangas, Don was also a member of the PMA debate team which grabbed the 8th place in the 2012 Asia International Intervarsity Debate held in Intramuros, Manila in August 2012. The PMA tandem competed against 91 teams from different universities in the country and Asia. The OWWA EDSP graduate was awarded as the sixth best speaker in the competition out of 184 debaters. An achiever, Don was adjudged as the 8th Best Debater in Asia in the United Asian Debating Championship held in Macau in May 2011; 2nd Best Debater in the Philippines in the National Debating Championship held in Cagayan de Oro City in October 2011 and 3rd Best Debater in the Philippines in the National Debating Championship held in Iloilo City in October 2012. “OWWA is very happy to know that one of our scholars made it to the West Point Academy. He is not only OWWA’s pride but he is the pride of the entire country. This is indeed good news,” Administrator Carmelita S. Dimzon said. Under the EDSP, 26 scholars graduated Summa Cumlaude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude last March 2013. They graduated from centers of excellence. For the school year 2013-2014, top 105 dependents of OWWA active members qualified for the EDSP administered by DOST in November last year. OWWA will be accepting applicants for next school year starting from July 1 to September 30 2013. OWWA also offers other scholarship degree programs such as OFW Dependents Scholarship Program (ODSP), and the Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program; short courses like Skills Upgrading Program for Seafarers (SUP) and Skills for Employment Scholarship Program (SESP). Don will be flying to the USA on 26 June to start his four- year military course scholarship grant. Classes at the West Point Academy will start on July 1.
