Ragi chocolates steal the showRagi chocolates steal the show. Ragi mudde has been the staple food for villagers in the dry areas of south Karnataka over the years. However, with the influx on pizzas and doughnuts, many urbanites are giving ragi items the go-by and for some, preparing items out of millet is a challenge. Bucking the trend is BG Latha, a resident of Laggere near Peenya, who uses ragi to make something most of us love -- chocolates. At the ongoing International Krishi Mela - 2013 at the GKVK campus near Hebbal, the demand for her chocolates has been tremendous. On Saturday, Latha and her team were swamped by curious visitors. When we started our business with ragi products like malt and powder a few years ago, we had a few competitors. We wanted to be different and decided to make chocolates. Krishi Mela has been a great platform for us and within three days, weve sold more than 60kgs of chocolates at the stall, she added. Latha and her family run Shree Agro Foods which employs four persons. Ragi chocolates have become our flagship product. We dont use any machines. We prepare it using cocoa, sugar and ragi powder before molding it. Each chocolate cost Rs 5, she added. Latha said she always wanted to be an entrepreneur and had little clue that with ragi, shed fulfil her dream so soon. Variety on display The food court has a range of items from jowar roti to masala dosa, fish dishes from Mangalore, different kinds of pickles to desserts, beverages such as matka tea as well as Coorg honey. While sweet stalls serving North Karnataka dishes were hugely popular. Courtesy : TOI
