Rail companies need to be open and willing to work with the people who live near their tracks, especially when it comes to the transportation of dangerous goods. But it shouldnt be up to individual residents to seek out emergency response plans on their own. We need the federal government to do its job: ensure there are enough inspectors to enforce existing regulations, amend regulations to take into account the realities of whats being transported, work with municipalities and industry on response plans and actually implement the Transportation Safety Board recommendations instead of simply holding press conferences about them.
