Grandma has been spending lots of time down the street with a neighbor lady, and one day Grandma asks Ruey to come there with her. She shows Ruey around inside the house and it is a delightful place. There is a friendly kitchen with pretty dishes. The sitting room has a cozy fireplace and rocking chair. There is one bedroom fixed up with pink and white apple blossoms on the wallpaper, a beautiful rug and two beds, one the size for a little girl and one the size of Ruey’s doll. To Ruey’s surprise, Grandma tells Ruey that she has bought this house and asks Ruey if she would like to live here with her. Ruey is concerned that Aunt Tood and Uncle Toodles will be hurt if she leaves them. Grandma says she has talked to them and it is ok, and they only live a short walking distance away so they will be seeing them all the time. As the story ends, the men from the livery stable arrive at the house along with Aunt Tood and Uncle Toodles and some other neighbors, and everyone has fried chicken and cake; and live happily ever after. All childrens books should have a happy ending. There is time enough for realism in their literature later in life. I have tried for several months to get a copy of this rare, out-of-print book. It has been for sale on Amazon and Ebay for a price out of my range. I tried putting in a ridiculously low bid on Ebay but was unsuccessful. I tried interlibrary loan from my local library (where I work) several times but was turned down. I sent a letter to the Library of Congress in Washington DC and begged. To my surprise and delight, the Fed Ex man arrived one day at the library with a package from the Library of Congress who is, after all, lending me this precious book. I am so grateful to them.
