Ralph Redux The recipe for man includes an unusual combination of ingredients. Take a half-baked human, stir in spirituality until soft and pliable, throw in a pinch of this and a dollop of that, salt to taste and bake on low heat until tender. Sometimes it’s tough to keep just the right measure of our human and spiritual ingredients, but that’s just what we must do to live the life meant for us. If we lean too much toward the human, with all of its temptations and struggles, life becomes meaningless and hard. Spirituality without attention to the human realities can take us so much out of the world that we lose sight of why we’re here in the first place and accomplish nothing. Even though the human and the spiritual often seem almost to oppose each other, it takes an equal complement of both to make a dish worth serving. January 17, 2006
