Ramadan reflection: Part 00 We all feel excited by the prospect of the arrival of Ramadan. We all talk about it from weeks in advance but how many of us stop and think about what purpose has fasting in the month of Ramadan served for us, both at a personal or collective levels? Many of you have been fasting for years, in fact for some it has been for decades. Have you ever wondered how has the fasting benefited you and how have we benefited from fasting? Or has it been just a ritual you have followed? Now that Ramadan is at your doorstep have you been caught unprepared? Are you worried and anxious about what you are going to? How you are going to manage? How will you survive the no food and no drinks for extraordinarily long hours and very little sleep a whole month? The blessed Prophet of God used to fast more in the month of Sha’ban (the month before Ramadan) to prepare his body and mind for the month long fast in Ramadan. How much have you prepared? What steps have you taken towards its preparation? Human body and psyche loves to be a slave to habits and traditions. What bad habits and traditions would you like to abandon this Ramadan? What good habits and traditions would you like to renew and consolidate this month? One of the biggest killers of our time is obesity – the consequence of excessive eating and drinking. Muslim community is not immune from it at all. Do you usually lose those extra pounds and kilos in the month of Ramadan? Or do you actually gain weights? What will your personal target be? Changing habits require changing attitudes and changing attitudes require refining character. When you refine your character you become a better human being. What personality traits have you thought of changing in this month of Ramadan? Or are you very happy with all your inter-personal and social attributes? Knowledge is the most important asset you need to flourish and find contentment in life. Without knowledge you are no different than the animals. Sadly, a lot of Muslims do not now much about their faith. They do not do much to address this terrible knowledge deficit misfortune. What programme have you planned that would increase your Islamic knowledge this Ramadan? How will you be different from the previous months? A lot of people have extremely high IQ but very low emotional intelligence (EQ). Month of Ramadan will provide you an ideal opportunity to be in touch with your inner feelings, your emotions and deeper thoughts. Have you identified what area of emotional intelligence you would like to develop? Finally, in Ramadan our heart is softer, your mind is cleaner and temptations have less impact. You are more conscious of the impact of our behavior on other people. How will you transform your life in this month long intensive spiritual daily retreat? Watch this space, I intend to post 30 short reminders on my facebook pages, please pray that I can fulfill my plan and you can benefit from it. Please send your feedback and share it as widely as you can. © Ajmal Masroor, July 9, 2013 youtube/watch?v=haq3T_Brq1k
