Ramadhan Day 1 Hadith: The Prophet (saw) said: “When the month - TopicsExpress

Ramadhan Day 1 Hadith: The Prophet (saw) said: “When the month of Ramadan comes, the gates of mercy are opened, and gates of Hell are locked and devils are chained”. [Muslim Book 6, No. 2361] The Prophet (saw) makes three points in this hadith, and reflecting on these three simple but crucial points is a wonderful base for furthering your efforts this month inshaa’Allah! 1. “The gates of mercy are opened” By the gates of mercy, the Prophet (saw) is referring to two things- the gates of jannah, and Allah’s mercy. We have access to Allah’s mercy all other 11 months of the year, however, during this blessed month Allah (swt) increases His willingness to forgive, His willingness to bestow mercy, and His willingness to guide us. During the rest of the year, we must knock on His doors- but during this month it’s an open invitation. All we have to do is accept it. 2. “The gates of hell are locked” The gates of hell are literally closed off during this month, it is the month where we are saved from the wrath of the hell fire leaving solely a one way path to Jannah. There’s literally no way that any of us could earn jahannam this month, how is the mercy of Allah! He leaves no way but the straight way during this month, and blocks all other paths. 3. “The devils are chained” This is definitely the most common known fact about Ramadan. All of us sigh breaths of relief as shaitaan gets locked away for 30 days. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone will turn into an angel and stop sinning. This is because that’s not how shaitaan works. Throughout the year, shaitaan literally trains our brains to submit to our nafs and desires. It comes to the point where he no longer has to whisper because we become slaves to what he addicted us too. So yes, shaitaan is gone. But no, everything will not be rainbows and butterflies. However, the most important thing to take out of this is that because he is gone, you are able to turn back to Allah without any setbacks or distractions. He’s not there to tempt you back into the same habits. You are free to go back to Allah, so run so far ahead that when he’s released he won’t be able to catch up. Have a wonderful first day of fasting!
