Randall, Tuesday, there was yet another filibuster. This time, it thwarted my legislation to reinstate unemployment benefits for nearly 1.5 million Americans who are out of work. Its hard not to be extremely disappointed. These 1.5 million Americans and their families were counting on the Senate to act and renew these modest benefits that would help keep them afloat until they find new jobs. Instead, my commonsense legislation fell victim to politics, and the American people are paying the price. We must do better -- and quickly. Thats why my colleague, Senator Barbara Boxer, and I are circulating this online petition -- and we hope youll sign on. Sign our petition to the Senate Republican leadership now: Urge them to come back to the table and work with Democrats to pass an extension of unemployment insurance immediately. The fact is, we worked hard to address Republican concerns in this bill. This wasnt a take it or leave it proposition. First, they demanded that this legislation be paid for by reducing spending and not cutting wasteful loopholes -- even though similar long-term unemployment benefits have historically been considered emergency spending and were not paid for. So we did. But that wasnt good enough. Then they asked for amendments, so we said yes. But that wasnt good enough. I have worked in good faith to hammer out a compromise bill that both Democrats and Republicans could support -- so we could help these 1.5 million Americans and their families who need our help, now more than ever. Its time for the Senate to act. Sign our petition to the Senate Republican leadership now: Urge them to come back to the table and work with Democrats to pass an extension of unemployment insurance immediately. We have to help these families. We have to keep the economy moving forward and creating jobs. We are not going to give up until we get this done -- and I hope youll stand with us.
