Random Chasidic Vocabulary Lesson #51327.55601001. Today’s term: Babbas. Literally means a multitude of grandmothers. The urban dictionary definition is: So the hosiery company Palm - whose merchandise was approved by the Satmar Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum – used to only make kosher thigh-highs. They didn’t make tights (pantyhose) till about year 2000. To keep the thigh-highs from rolling down to the keduches, you had to attach it to a brutally tight girdle that promised to be slenderizing. It wasn’t. It just rearranged the belly fat so that it ran over the girdle like a generous offering. Very fluid, is that fat. If you were already skinny, you were not, because you had a behind that had to be (this is important!) flattened out with the girdle. Anyway, when you weren’t in the mood of wrestling with the girdle, say, on a lazy Sunday when the rest of the world wore sweats, you got comfortable too and made the thigh-highs stay up on your leg by making a knot all the way on top of each sock. Those knots were called babbas. The babbas (like grandmothers) could be a little defiant, and had a habit of undoing themselves. They would not survive up there for long and you’d soon find yourself with one orange-canvas covered leg and a second naked white one that had an orange anklet hanging over the SAS shoe. And now you know!
