Anyway, when you weren’t in the mood of wrestling with the girdle, say, on a lazy Sunday when the rest of the world wore sweats, you got comfortable too and made the thigh-highs stay up on your leg by making a knot all the way on top of each sock. Those knots were called babbas. The babbas (like grandmothers) could be a little defiant, and had a habit of undoing themselves. They would not survive up there for long and you’d soon find yourself with one orange-canvas covered leg and a second naked white one that had an orange anklet hanging over the SAS shoe.
