Random fact of the day: From 1952 until the mid 1970s, foreigners seeking citizenship in Iceland had to adopt completely new names from a list of traditional Icelandic names. The eventual change of the law was brought about in part by world-renowned musician Vladimir Ashkenazys immigration and refusal to change his name. He was granted an exception because of his fame. Pressure from others eventually forced the Icelandic Parliament to drop the law completely in 1996.
