Random things for a Thirstday..... I think Westeros (Game of Thrones) really needs Jack Bauer to settle things down. Things learned on (gasp!) TV: Fed Up is a term from falconry. If a falcon is full it wont hunt and the way to tell a full falcon from a hungry one was to feel their neck. If it was full and puffy the falcon was fed up. To hold a falcon on your hand and keep him still you sat it on your index finger then crossed your thumb over his front talons. He was therefore Under your thumb. If the falcon was still squirmy you took the tie to his blinder and wrapped it around behind him to your pinky finger -- Wrapped around your little finger. Ever notice that tv shows seem to start out with an idea (well, some have at least a thought in there somewhere) but after the first season or two the writers seem to gravitate away from what worked so well and have to add The Big Scary. The Big Scary is usually like some sort of shadowy organized effort often bent on World Domination or some such. Firstly I think too many writers grew up reading Marvel comics. Secondly, it is easier and takes less thinking (and talent) to write a story line where the main story revolves around the characters in the show fighting something bigger than themselves. This makes sense in a show like 24 (back to Jack again!) where the antagonist is supposed to be The Big Scary but not so much in a weekly drama. Good writing is taking the original premise of the show and keeping it fresh and interesting each week - think MASH where the Big Scary was always there, just as a background (the war, the government decisions that got them there) - against what we have today where it seems most show eventually take the short cuts that lead them away from a good tale into the area where that Big Scary out there is the main story, losing along the way what got us watching in the first place. enough. Off my soap box and heading outside.
