Randomness ---------------- Let me be clear about one thing: I accept most any form of music. Each genre has its nuances, and each year artists find new ways to bring those nuances together. Hip hop in particular tends to give us a flood of artists who march to their own drum and make it work. I can understand things from the purists point of view - I agree that its been brought down some. I compare its recent state to the infamous video game crash of 1983: the market was flooded with product... and most of it was substandard quality. Thankfully in recent years weve had more artists emerge to bring some of it back. On the other hand I can also understand things from a current perspective. While it is important for any art form (and lets be real, hip hop is as pure an art as there is) to uphold tradition, its just as important that its allowed to branch out and grow. Its that ability to branch out that draws me to hip hop so much. I guess its because Im a bit more tolerant than most, but I dont really mind if an artist isnt all the way traditional. To me talent is talent - l can respect honest talent and will recognize talent when I see it. That... brings me to tonights American Music Awards. I admit when I first heard Thrift Shop I was like what the hell?. However, a friend convinced me to at least give Macklemore a chance. While he may not be my first choice, I respect his talent. He at least puts forth an honest effort - which is more than I can say about most rappers today. I have no doubt he will continue to put out good music in the years to come. Having said that, with all due respect to Macklemore I feel they got this award wrong. I realize that may come off as me trying to take away from Macklemore but Im not. I offer my congratulations and do hope he continues the good work - Im 100% in favor of musical diversity. Part of me is just curious about two things: 1) who voted on nominees? 2) what do they consider to be hip hop? #2 is the one that concerns me. I listened to both Macklemores The Heist and Kendricks good kid, m.A.A.d city. Each of them succeeds in their own right. I get we all have different tastes and differing opinions, but when it comes to a genre like hip hop you cant just apply a standard definition and expect it to stick across the board. That... is the most likely explanation I can think of for this. Again let me make clear I respect Macklemore. In this instance, however, I felt Kendrick shouldve won.
