Randy Bolster Randy Bolster carried a gun but never wore a holster He was big and burley rough and surly He was after outlaw “Cowboy” Bill Turley The star on his chest meant business never the lest. He rode into town cold and tired and all broke down; He needed food and a drink and a place to sit and think. The snow it started to fall and the wind it did blow, music played and light from the saloon it was aglow. Through the batwing doors he did walk and the crowd did balk music stopped as did the talk, a few steps to the bar seemed afar. The barkeep he did speak asking the stranger what he would want No insult or taunt whiskey and food was all he did seek. Maybe a week or two Ranger Bolster would continue to pursue; Randy Bolster will trail, capture or kill the outlaw “Cowboy” Bill. After whiskey and a meal, a little rest would be fine; But he had to travel while there was a trail and visible sign. Randy ate his meal in peace in small room apart from the bar; It was time to go into the cold and the snow this man with a star. There was some time to spare for his horse to feed, a quick rubdown for a horse in need, nothing too good for his loyal steed. Into the Franklin’s Randy did go, the trail was steep and the ride was slow, sleep or rest would be nice but Bolster must continue on the go. Bill Turley needed to be stopped; he killed two men in a rage; shot and killed a woman and child while robbing the El Paso stage. Bill Turley needed to ride for this he knew into the valley and over the hill, the man behind him he did know, tougher than most and willing to kill. Turley sensed his fear and as hard as he rode he knew that Randy was near. The wind started to blow mixing with the sand with the powdery snow. Travels became dangerous and outright slow no more trails that did show; Randy felt that he was close but in the dark a risky decision he did suppose. He traveled until nearly dawn; in a grove of trees he choose to rest; He knew that “Cowboy” Bill was somewhere near, maybe the hill he’s about to crest. Randy was doing his very best, trailing Bill with no more sleep and no more rest; He must continue to pursue so “Cowboy” Bill would get what was due. A shot rang out and flying bark from a nearby tree, looking around but nothing to see. Randy sitting on the ground carefully and methodically listening for a rustling sound. All was silent for a time and then a shout, loud and clear, “come and get me” I’ll be here. Why hurry Randy thought, he could be wrong but he was in for a fight. Dropping back into the trees a cold breeze stirred some leaves; he waited for the moment to seize. Snow fell from the sky and Randy thought to himself; what a day for a man to die. Rifle fire once again but missed its mark by forty feet Randy refused to go down in defeat, patiently waiting to make his move, Randy was in no hurry he had nothing to prove. Gunfire became more common, each round a wasted shot nothing close to the lawman’s spot, nothing to lose but only to win because it won’t be long before “Cowboy” Bill will get caught. Bill yelled to the Ranger below, are you coming out or do we have to fight? Now Turley’s location was a little clearer the Ranger felt he could circle to his rear. Quietly advancing at a steady pace but the deteriorating weather would make it a race, a restless horse moves around pawing at the ground, Bolster moves with nearly a sound. Rifle shots once again shattered the still; all Randy needed was some luck and skill. He waited an instant to think it through, he could now see Bill and that was true. He walked slowly from behind with revolver in hand; everything is better than he had planned. “Cowboy” Bill he could sense that something was not right and there would be no fight. I will go with you Bolster without a fight; you see I am in a terrible plight; no more food or water to drink, a horse that is lame and I am tired of this game. The money is on my horse and here is my gun it’s not like I thought it would be an outlaw on the run. I hurt a lot of people and killed one or two, took some money just for the thrill that is me “Cowboy” Bill. I request a special plea just between you and me; a certain song I want sang on the day that I will hang. I thought that you would shoot me dead because I have traveled the roads that few will ever tread. Take my story and reveal it to all, don’t take my path and don’t fail or fall tell them true that I am through. I was wrong all along but I had no way to quit everything that I say has been hard for me to admit. Let’s head down and into town, I am hungry and I am cold; I need a fire and hot food, jail sounds mighty good. Randy walked up to Bill and shackled his wrist, there was no hesitation and Bill did not resist. Time to go I will pay my dues; the people of El Paso will like the news and to the gallows I will end, It may have been better if you had shot me dead and nothing more need to be said, down the trail they did head.
