Rant ahead: Im sorry, but I cant agree with this. Maybe if the title were 18 Things PEOPLE Should Know/Do Before Discussing Racism The fact that this is calling out white people alone, is perpetuating racism itself. Asiatic people are racist. Hispanic people are racist. Polynesian people are racist. Middle Eastern people are racist. And yes, people of African descent are racist. It doesnt matter whos more outspoken about it, it doesnt matter from which camp (which, really, should just be the human race) its coming from, its all racism no matter from who its coming. It sickens me when somebody points out Look at what this young black man has been able to achieve Why does it matter the color of his skin? What were the circumstances of him growing up? Did he grow up in the suburbs coddled by academically nourishing parents, or still in the suburbs, neglectful parents? Did he grow up in a bad neighborhood, with nourishing or neglectful parents? If his white or hispanic or asian kid next door neighbor accomplished just as much as him would it be viewed as an equal success story? The same goes the other way, when I hear things like Look at this white boy dance! or This white boy can ball!, its all expectations of how someone of a certain ethnicity is supposed to perform, or where their strong and weak points will stand. Seriously, people, its sickening. This article just continues the notion that racism is something white people use against people of color. everybody has a color. Im olive-toned in the summer. Some people are more of a peach tone. Some people describe themselves as mocha. Yet, when this article comes to the defense of these people of color, it cites that you should read a book from a Black author. Racism isnt just about two ethnicities. And it definitely doesnt only come from one. Anyways, Im getting ahead of myself. My main message is this: yes, racism has a strong presence in this country, and many countries abroad. But when it gets to the point where we all point to one ethnic group as the sole racists and calling anything else reverse racism (total bullshit, by the way), were really just using fire to fight fire. Im not saying white people arent guilty of racism, but if everybody who (terrible analogy here) who stole from the cookie jar points to the person who stole the most, is that to say that the others arent guilty? Lets get past this.
