Rant of the night ... put your money where your mouth is. PAY YOUR MODELS! New Model Photographers/ Hobbyists/ Advanced Amateurs and Artists, I cant tell you how many times I hear about tfp this and free shoot that. I guess the logic is if you throw 10 darts in the air blindfolded maybe 1 will hit the bullseye. Some of you guys then get mad at a model b/c you see her in my portfolio (usually for a client job) but she wont shoot tfp for you at her own expense with no help from you whatsoever. Here is another idea ... do 1-2 shoots a month correctly that will add to your portfolio with the right kind of talent and the right sort of portfolio investment. If you do that 6 months in a row your version of reality and how much models chase you vs you chase them will change night and day. Lets break it down ... a portfolio photo shoot (estimates) $100 studio rental $100 negotiate a good deal with a quality makeup artist $300 hire a quality model for a few hours, half day, day- whatever you can negotiate $100 misc costs ... gas, maybe a garment or two, snacks, etc You are talking about $600. A $600 a month hobby is NOT untenable. Golfers pay that. People who fish on boats pay that, etc. Lets say you feel like there is no way you could afford that ... offer yourself as a 2nd shooter in any wedding photographer forum- you will easily make that in 1-2 jobs a month. Why is it important you pay ... B/C then you will be picky. You will choose the right model with the right look to draw positive attention to your portfolio. She will be serious and motivated as will you be. You wont be totally depending on her makeup skills to make or break your shoot. You will be shooting in a professional environment, etc. If you still dont buy into what Im saying- limit your portfolio shoots to 2 a month- one doing it your way .. invite 20 girls, 4 will say yes, 2 show up with varying levels of enthusiasm and preparation- often times with a look that will not add real value to your modeling portfolio or attract new clients to you. Then do one the way Im suggesting here. This is EXACTLY what I did as a hobbyist, as a new photographer, as a published part time photographer and even today to some degree. Forget your ego. If you were really so amazing that every quality model in the world is fawning over you and chasing you- you would simply just line up a client for a girl you are interested in. Simple. But if that is not your reality than maybe you arent as good as you can be one day or maybe this is more your hobby than your job and you should have enough respect for your own time and enjoyment to pay for it. If you dont invest in yourself- how can you honestly expect a return. Please feel free to PM me if you feel like this is impossible- I will be happy to help you and it doesnt matter if you are rich, poor, young or old. If you are hungry and can swallow your pride- I know this advice will help you!
