Rare and Valuable Glass Grand Piano at Forsyths Have you always wondered how the other half live or fancied a peek into the billionaire’s lifestyle? There’s a chance to do just that at Forsyth as were currently displaying a very rare grand piano made completely from transparent glass, with an eye-watering price tag. There are only a handful of such instruments currently in the UK, which are manufactured by leading German piano-makers, Schimmelii and imported into the UK exclusively by Forsyth’s. The instrument in store has already been sold to a private buyer who contacted Forsyth’s directly to make this very specific purchase. One of the most expensive pianos ever made, this instrument is destined for an apartment in One Hyde Park, London’s priciest address, but you can view it in the shop until the middle of August. The glass grand piano was originally designed by Schimmel in the 1950s as a one off showpiece instrument. Later in the 1980s it was developed for stage and tv performances so that the piano lid did not obscure the audience’s view of the rest of the band and Ray Charles, Prince, Lenny Kravitz and many others have played them. Made from plexi-glass, the same material used for bulletproof windows, the manufacturing process for the case is completely different to normal pianos and they are usually made to order in the Schimmel workshops with a retail price starting at £115,000 each. The piano at Forsyth’s, awaiting its new home, has been customized with chrome fittings giving it a completely unique look. The internal mechanics of the piano are visible and enhanced with internal lighting and the instrument can also be switched to full automation, playing by itself whilst controlled by its own dedicated iPad. Brilliant for parties and entertaining, one of the instruments still in the UK was the centrepiece of the bar on the QEII ocean liner. “Its quite by chance that this magnificent, one-of-a-kind piano is having a stopover in our store before it heads to its new home in London”, says Simon Loat, Director of Forsyth Brothers. Its certainly attracting attention and we’d be delighted for visitors to pop in and take a look, but hurry, as it leaves us in mid-August. The Schimmel glass grand piano is displayed during shop opening hours 9am-5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sundays.
