Rare thundersnow event is captured on camera by our CNN crew in Buffalo, NY. Thundersnow is a thunderstorm that has snow reaching the surface of the earth instead of rain. It is a rare event because in the winter, the lower levels of the troposphere (near the surface) are typically dry and cold which stabilizes the environment preventing thunderstorms from developing. For t-storm development, we would typically like to see an unstable airmass (warm and moist air; among other things). Elevated instability (higher level instability) and strong dynamic lifting aid in the development of thundersnow. Both of which have been present during this phenomenal lake effect snow event.
