Raspberry ketone is a natural phenolic compound responsible for the sweet and heavenly aroma of fresh raspberries. After rising to fame in the USA as a potential fat-burner, the powerful enzyme is now one of the most commonly used ingredients in weight loss supplements all around the world. One of the most expensive components in the food industry, raspberry ketone is also used as a fragrance in perfumery and cosmetics to impart a floral and fruity odour. How Can It Help? Since raspberry ketone is structurally similar to the herbal stimulant synephrine, it has been quickly recognised by the dieting community as a possible thermogenic agent. Thermogenesis refers to the body’s generation of heat and determines the amount of daily energy that is expended during periods of rest. A thermogenic agent is able to trick the body into burning calories at a faster rate throughout the day without any changes being made to either the diet or exercise routine. It does this by increasing resting metabolism and converting excess calories into heat, which can then be released by the body as thermal energy rather than being stored as fat. Many scientists and nutritionists also believe that the fruit extract encourages the body’s production of certain hormones involved in the fat-burning process, such as adiponectin and norepinephrine. Adiponectin is a protein hormone which assists in the breakdown of fat molecules, regulates blood sugar levels and boosts the metabolism. Obese individuals often have lower levels of adiponectin so increasing the secretion of this fat-burning hormone is important for both weight loss and long-term metabolic health. Norepinephrine is a hormone and neurotransmitter that triggers the release of glucose from energy stores and helps to break down fat cells. It can also raise body temperature and slightly increase resting heart rate, which results in greater calorie expenditure and faster fat-burning. Is There Any Scientific Evidence? There are currently no EFSA approved health claims or scientific human studies that support the weight loss effects of raspberry ketone, although it is clear from anecdotal evidence that the ingredient has provided beneficial results for a very large number of people. Raspberry ketone is still a relatively new ingredient, which explains this lack of scientific research, but more studies are expected to emerge in support of its effectiveness and force the EFSA to take note of its potential health benefits should its popularity continues to rise.
