Rav Tzvi Meir tells the following story: A person meets his friend after Rosh Hashana and asks him Hey Chaim. How was your Rosh Hashana? Chaim replies It was beautiful. The prayer service was beautiful. We spent every meal speaking only about Torah and singing zemirot. We learned and recited Psalms all afternoon without dozing for a minute. The kids behaved like angels Wow! Great! Sounds like it was perfect his friend replies. Well almost perfect. The kid next to me in Shul couldnt stop making noise during Musaf and his father was so engrossed in his prayer that he didnt do anything about it. I had to shissss the kid half of Mussaf, but besides that it was perfect.” To this Rav Tzvi Meir says, Fool! That was your whole test of Rosh Hashana. Maybe your whole year depended on your reaction to the kid. The rest of Yom Tov was not your test! Rosh Hashanah is the one day of the year dedicated to the principle that God is King of the universe. The holidays chief goal is that by the end of the day, we will not only have tasted a number of apples dipped in honey but will also have arrived at the recognition, on some level, of the fact that God is truly -- that means actually -- the source of all events. Therefore, dont decide for yourself what Rosh Hashana has to be all about. Happily accept and submit yourself to what the King of all Kings decides will be your particular experience on this most auspicious day. Good luck!
