Rave is still a highly controversial and sensitive issue in - TopicsExpress

Rave is still a highly controversial and sensitive issue in America, which leads to a lot of fighting and racial clash. Heres a story: I came to America when I was 7, never having seen anyone other than Ukrainian Eastern Orthodox people. I was excited and happy to see that people from various backgrounds existed and it amazes to see how diverse the world really was. Obviously, I did not speak English so I was place in ESL. One day, the bulk of the African American kids that had the same lunch period as me began to verbally attack me, some even getting physical. I had no idea why. We had just began learning about racism and someone has misheard me say something at lunch. My russian friends were teaching me how to say popular phrases and I said that my favorite color, which was black, was da bum. A girl swore she heard me say that blacks were bums. I didnt even know what a bum was in English. Thankfully, people stepped in and explained the situation to the school kids. However, that was my first experience realizing that skin color was seen as a point of difference. Because of that event I began to be hyper aware of what I said, making sure it was politically correct at all times. Throughout my life, I have been called a cracker, a slave owner, racist, privileged, and worse simply because of my skin color. Yet, I wasnt even born in America. I am not saying that white privilege does not exist, it does to an extent. The extent being that I have been told that I am Not allowed to talk about race or racial relations or any of the recent shooting because I am white and dont know what Im talking about. Im all for political protests but in the past several weeks there has been ignorance and hate shown from both the white and the black side, polarizing conversations instead of having an active discussion for peace and change. What irks me is the fact that those, who, if you actually read the philosophies and white privilege essays, are not deemed at white are targeted because, they appear white, which includes immigrants, Latinos, and people with mixed racial backgrounds with a light skin tone. Events such as the restaurants protests and singling out white patrons in order to publicly shame them for simply eating out is racism. Black people like brunch too, so do asian people, and Latinos, and middle eastern people. Heres also a nifty thought, when people label something as white thats giving into white privileged thought and excluding people who are not white from it, furthering the race issues. But hey, what do I know, Im just a white girl.
