Re: Ello/the Facebook exodus, I completely support the LGBT communitys frustration with Facebooks naming policy and agree a safe solution is needed. I especially think all the major players in tech need to get with the program when it comes to protecting womens voices online. (Many men have no idea what its like to be scared to post publicly.) But I am going to be amused when people figure out how difficult it is to build a fully featured and well-functioning social network. I recognize that I am partial, but the migration would be more likely to succeed if it were to a real contender like Google+. (Full disclosure: I have not been using Google+ lately due to the network effects of Facebook.) Remember why Facebook was able to overtake Friendster? Friendster got slow. I am also confused about why people hate ad-supported sites so much. Its expensive to build good online tools. Would you really pay for Facebook to be ad free? (If that were true, Im pretty sure Facebook would offer that option.) Other than taking up screen real estate, do ads actually harm you? Ive personally found well-targeted ads to be useful. In general, social networks are only as good as the effort you put in to making them useful (cultivating your friends, your feed, the content you generate, etc.). So we have to be careful to understand what exactly we are running away from -- an evil company or our old selves? All that being said, its about time for an open social network standard like email. At least for the basic features of most social networks. Its annoying to have online interaction so splintered. Choice of social network has a real impact on ability to connect with friends. (I know, for example, that a few of my friends have great content on Twitter that I never see.) Wouldnt it be better if we could all choose our lens without missing out on our friends who choose differently?
