Re-Visioning Tomorrow: Emancipation for a New Century Public Forum: September 26, 2013: 6:00-8:00pm Theme: Urban Blues, Cultural Continuities, and the African Aesthetic YWCA Boston, Kuumba Library: 140 Clarendon Street, Boston For this public forum, we are going into the streets of Havana and Boston to find out what is going on with the music culture that is being created now, the self-images and styles that are worn, and how the spiritual is expressed. What are the points of conjunction and disjunction in these two cities, one known for its heat and vibrancy and the other, at least to outsiders, seen as cold and historic, maybe even rigid? Obsesion, a Cuban performance group consisting of two young women, Magia and Alexey, will be in Boston to share the realities of their world, make connections, and learn about the youth culture and youth development work in Boston. Obsesion will present a short music video, Los Pelos, on the subject of hair and gender in the African Diaspora. Then they will talk about hip hop in Cuba, which is much more political than is the case in the United States. They will end by discussing Cuban spirituality, which is heavily influenced by African beliefs. Boston speakers include Yvette Modestin, who works with high school girls in the city; Alan West Duran, a Northeastern professor who has written extensively on Cuban culture; and Tony van der Meer, who is involved in African spiritualism in Boston.
